After several years, the wait is finally over! Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye can now be found on The Tin Can Bros Youtube Channel. I really adored working on this production. I met so many amazing creative individuals who I have since had the opportunity to work with on this shoot. It was the first series I was the makeup head on, which was a new challenge for me, and we had so many zany characters that were were able to have fun with. Even ones where at first glance I went “okay so they are just a regular person”, the actors would come in full of ideas of what there character was, and it was a delight getting to work with them to create their look.

New episodes are coming out every week, with 4 episodes already being out at the time of this posting (yes I’m behind on updating things), plus there’s a companion podcast that you can listen to with it too! so definitely go and give it and watch! I legitimately am watching it every week as its such a fun and charming series, and its been long enough since filming, that I legitimately have forgotten things so it makes it a fun treat for me too!

Tori Kelly

Tori Kelly Videos

Some new Work I did for singer Tori Kelly. Was delighted to not get to work on just one, but two music videos for her. It was beautiful getting to work on stories that were so personal to the artist and were reflections of direct memories. (I did the hair and makeup in both videos for the actors, Tori Kelly’s makeup and hair was handled by her personal team)

The first, ‘Change Your Mind’, was a hard look at her father and his absence in her life. We had the two men playing her father (one when she was a child, and one for modern day). for the younger dad focused on some subtle aging by emphasizing lines on his face, making him look weathered, and adding a tiny bit of gray to his hair line.

The second video, ‘Sorry Would Go A Long Way’, focused in on the relationship of her parents and its collapse. It contrasts the joy and ease of their wedding day to events at the end of their marriage. The video took place with Tori as a child, so we did some makeup and hair looks that would make sense for the 90’s, while giving the extremes of being polished and put together for the wedding vs the less then perfect feel for the separation. When we shot this I appreciated the song, however seeing the video and listening to the words really hit me on another level and I found myself crying as I watched it.

So, I swear I do more then just kickstarter campaigns! But those are things that have quick turn arounds, and everyone is always strongly encouraged to share! So they are the easiest things to put on here and talk about. Usually the idea is to not only promote the work I did, but also to get you to support the project! Well, this campaign hit their goal before I got around to posting about it!

So happy and proud for the entire StarKid Team! I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with several of these people multiple times, and I’m so grateful to have gotten to do so again. While they have already made their goal of $155,000, (at the time of this post they were at $190,000) you can still go and donate to get in on all the amazing rewards and gifts, and support your favorite musical theater group!

Somehow in my life, I feel backwards into the world of digital series. And I am so grateful that it happened! I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked on several webseries and digital shorts. One of the great joys of it is the friends I have made, and that I now get to make cool and creative content with them.
One of those friends is Ashley Clements, who I met when working on the webseries ‘The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye’ being made by the Tin Can Brothers. When she told me Brendan Bradley, William J. Stribling, and her were working on an adaptation of Macbeth I was so excited to work with them all! We’ve done the initial phase of filming, but they need some help raising funds to complete the project now. And of course, that where you lovely people come into play.

I really hope you can donate, and help complete this story. It’s been such a joy helping to bring these characters to life in a tech based setting, and I’m looking forward to getting back to work with all these amazing creative people! As of Now, they are nearly 60% to their goal of $25,00. Which is amazing, but they need help to meet the full amount. So be sure to check it out, support if you, gets some cool stuff, and spread the word!

If you have know me for awhile, then I’m sure at somepoint or another you have heard me mention the film Funemployment. I’ve even mentioned it on this blog a time or two. This is because being of that project was such a pivotal thing in my life. It was what started me on the path of full-time becoming a makeup artist in the film industry, and introduced me to friends and collaborators that I worked with for years to come, and to this very day. So, 5 years ago we did principle photography, then we did the kickstarter, then a while later we did some pickup scenes, and then in between then I know the director Christine Chen did countless sessions of ADR, edits, and reedits….but here it finally is! Available for your viewing pleasure.

You can find it on vimeo: http://vimeo.com/ondemand/funemployment
And also on Amazon.

Along with watching the full film finally, the gang has working on a podcast to accompany the film. You can hear from various members of the cast and crew discussing the crazy roller coaster that was the creating of the film! You can find it on all podcast players, and also you can find it in video form on their youtube here

Additionally, as I mentioned in a previous post, I’m actually one of the guest! and am in two episodes. Specifically if you want to hear me reminisce and talk about the shenanigans, and lack of experience I had, watch the two videos below!

What is the beginning of a new year without looking back at the years before and what all we have accomplished? And well, luckily friend and director Christine Chen made that super easy for me this year! So flashback to five years ago, when I had was a drift in life, loved makeup, loved movies, wanted to combine the two, but had no clue how to. And into my life came Christine, who was working on her first feature film. And so began the insanity of that project, and many more to come!

Came back to the present, and Christine is getting ready to release that first film, planning on making another! So how does all this happen? Well, here’s the parts you need to know:

-Podcast! Because of what a crazy ride making that first film was, it was decided that it needed to be documented. and what better way then in this day and age, then to do a podcast. You can find the Funemployment podcast on most streaming services. Also if you want to specifically hear from me I’ve included the video of me gabbing:

-Preselling Funemployment! Yup, as mentioned the film is finally coming out, and you can go ahead are buy it in advance at this link:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

-Buy the collection of short films! Can’t wait for Funemployment? That’s okay, you can watch a collection of award 5 winning short films that the Moth to Flame Team has worked on! Plus along with getting some instant entertainment, you also get to contribute to funding our next feature. Win win!

its amazing looking back at all these projects, seeing how far we’ve come from making these, and also the pride in sharing them. It has been an interesting 5 years, and I’m so happy with where life has taken me. here’s to the next 5, and making more amazing projects, with great people!

Below you will find ‘The Case of the Gilded Lily’, a short made by Shipwrecked Comedy that I got to work on earlier this year. I can easily say it was hands down the most unique project I’ve been on and one that I am absolutely ecstatic to have been apart of! If you want to skip my thoughts on it/me being sentimental, now is the time to scroll down and press play. If not, then continue reading.

When I was studying film at UT Austin, one of the areas I focused in on was was old movies and film history. I loved the topic so much, that for a while I planned on leaving makeup behind me and was going to go all the way for my Phd in media studies to become a film historian. (If you had questions on how nerdy I was, I think they were just answered) So a black and white, period, film noir, set in 1939 Hollywood was an dream project to do! The trailer they put together for the film I think sums it up better then I ever could:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_video admin_label=”Video” src=”https://youtu.be/02xoj4vbzqA” /][et_pb_text admin_label=”Challenges*” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” max_width=”620px” text_font_size=”20″ text_font_size_last_edited=”on|tablet” text_text_color=”#363636″ text_line_height=”1.5em” use_border_color=”off” border_style=”solid” custom_margin=”30px||0px|” disabled=”off” border_color=”#ffffff”]

When I was first contacted about working on the production, I was sent a link to the Kickstarter page, and I was in love with the project within minutes. This was something that was right up my alley, and yet completely out of my usual realm and challenging in the best possible way. The makeup designs I got to create on this were so fun. Working in black and white is such a different medium then color. If you go too subtle it won’t show, but at the same time you can’t go too heavy or else it looks like a stage play. All the guys had to have their lips darkened in order for them to be defined, everyone was contoured to make such their face still had dimensions and wasn’t too flat. And then there was also that we were doing period hair and makeup, plus multiple shoot days involved the majority of the cast. (Huge thanks to Cortney Heiser for coming in and assisting me on the crazy days!) Even on the most simple of shoot days, there was still a tremendous amount of work that went into it. But my goodness it was worth it!

(Here’s some production posters that they have been releasing on the @ShipWreckedComedy Instagram)

Everyday I was exhausted by the time I got home, however everyday was such a creative joy. All the members of the production put so much heart into it, it was magical. On top of that too, everyone was so humble, and kind, and friendly. The Shipwrecked family are all so funny and talented. They created these great characters in this very defined world that all just mesh together perfectly. Beyond the work I got to do on this, I’m so grateful to have met all these people who I have now gotten to work with again since, and also now consider to be my friends.

I could go on for longer and get more sappy, but instead I gonna cut it short (as i look back over this post I see I may have missed my chance for that). I leave you you the funny and brilliant ‘Case of the Gilded Lily’.

‘Ya Albi’ is a project that I got to work on in the spring of 2016, that will always stick with me. It’s one of the few productions that really I feel made me more aware as a person of an issue that is such an important topic both in our country, and in the world. Predominantly I’ve worked mainly in thrillers/horrors, romances, and comedies where social issues of the time tend not to be a huge part of the narrative.
When reading the script that director Christine Chen sent me, I was on board right away having worked with her numerous times, and having very much enjoyed working on the short ‘A Birds Nest’ that we had previously also shot in Shreveport. But I will admit, I only knew a small bit about the refugee crisis in Syria and was very naive about it all.
Through the course of researching during preproduction, seeing the characters beautifully materialized by our talented actors, and suddenly listening more when the topic was talked of on the news, I suddenly felt myself becoming so much more aware and sympathetic to what was happening. And that is the power of film, and why films like this matter. Because they make you connect to things happening on the other side of the world, to people that you have never met, but suddenly you are able to on a human level empathize that these are people. People who just want to live a life, and have their children live a life without fear.
I like to think that we live in a world that more and more people are opening their hearts and minds to what is happening. And then someone will leave a comment comparing these people to snakes, saying that ‘they want to kill us all, kill our children, destroy our way of life.’
And once again, I’m reminded why this story matters. That we still have so far to come with this, and that there are still people who have such hatred towards people trying to escape a country where their lives are threatened.
With everything that has happened in the past year, this little film that I had the honor of doing makeup on has been trucking along, going to scores of festivals, winning award after award, and being seen now by countless people. It warms my soul to know that it has hopefully broadened some many people’s minds. ‘Ya Albi’ has been doing so well, that it is now Oscar Qualified. So now along with wanting this story to be spread for telling the story, we have a little extra motivation to get it out there! And the best was for that to happen is to get as many people to know about the film. Below you will find the trailer, all I ask is that you watch it, comment on, share it with others, if there’s a screening near you go watch it and bring a friend (for updates on screenings check out the Facebook page).
